The New Yorker cartoon features Barack and Michelle Obama celebrating with a fist bump in the Oval Office in front of a portrait of Osama bin Laden and an American flag burning in the fireplace. Mrs. Obama is portrayed as a militant radical, while Obama appears foreign. The New Yorker believes the image reflects, some might say mocks, the rumors that have plagued the couple over the last 18 months.
WOW. Just wow. I don’t have words. The cover is wild. If you can get beyond the cover, the article inside by Ryan Lizza, “Making It“, traces Obama’s early rise through Chicago politics. The 18 page article draws a portrait of Obama as a skilled, calculating politico, mastering the game in the notoriously corrupt political arena we call ‘Chicago politics’.
Update:Artist Barry Blitt defends the cover, saying that “It seemed to me that depicting the concept would show it as the fear-mongering ridiculousness that it is.” See his full statement (and previous covers) here.
