The New Yorker Magazine Obama Cover

14 Jul

The New Yorker cartoon features Barack and Michelle Obama celebrating with a fist bump in the Oval Office in front of a portrait of Osama bin Laden and an American flag burning in the fireplace. Mrs. Obama is portrayed as a militant radical, while Obama appears foreign. The New Yorker believes the image reflects, some might say mocks, the rumors that have plagued the couple over the last 18 months.

WOW. Just wow. I don’t have words. The cover is wild. If you can get beyond the cover, the article inside by Ryan Lizza, “Making It“, traces Obama’s early rise through Chicago politics. The 18 page article draws a portrait of Obama as a skilled, calculating politico, mastering the game in the notoriously corrupt political arena we call ‘Chicago politics’.

Update:Artist Barry Blitt defends the cover, saying that “It seemed to me that depicting the concept would show it as the fear-mongering ridiculousness that it is.” See his full statement (and previous covers) here.

This is a hot topic in the blogosphere today. Here are a few other places disscussing it:

Would this cartoon be as funny if it featured a caricature of a Jew with a big nose and a bag of money burning a Palestinian flag or would that be considered racist and offensive?

This confirms that Ivy League educations and excessive intelligence are no protection from acts of sheer stupidity. The voters whose mental image of the Obama’s was so perfectly captured by your cartoonist are unlikely to actually read your article about them. Thus, this single image may be what tips the balance in November. Blame THAT on George Bush.

Read the piece by Steve Diamond at No Quarter blog, the link is above. Steve talks about the ANNENBERG CHALLANGE GRANT, which was the biggest thing Obama had ever done in his life in an Executive position. Why didn’t the NEW YORKER mention this connection between Obama and William Ayers? Ayers wasn’t “Just some guy from my neighborhood” as Obama likes to say. Obama wouldn’t have gone anywhere in Chicago politics without the help of William Ayers.

I like the New Yorker. In fact, I agreed to stay in a furnished apartment because of the “New Yorker” picture in my bathroom!
