Bill Clinton Giving Up the Goods to the Obama Team?

19 Nov

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Some husbands send flowers. Some buy chocolate. In the Hillary-Bill relationship, he gives up sources of foreign income and names of donors to show his support.

As the Obama transition team vetsHillary Clinton for a possible appointment as Secretary of State, a reported sticking point in the process has been Bill and his charitable foundation. The Clinton Global Initiative, a subset of the William J. Clinton Foundation, has extensive overseas dealings, possible conflicts-of-interest should his wife become secretary of state.

AP is reporting today that Hillary believes “the job is hers if she wants it.” And there are multiple reports that the former president is making concessions in the Obama team’s vetting requests, including an AP report that Clinton “has agreed to release the names of several major donors to his charitable foundation and will submit future foundation activities and paid speeches to a strict ethics review, said Democrats knowledgeable about the discussions.”

The New York Times says, “He would also cede day-to-day responsibility for his foundation so long as his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, served.”

Politico comes with the most intriguing information of the day — that an announcement of a formal offer, should it be made, could come as early as next week.

This flurry of new reports comes amidst two pieces of interesting news. The first is that Hillary may not be sold on the job and wants to try her hand at health-care reform again.  The other is that in a new Rasmussen report, 33 percent of people polled thought Colin Powell would do the best work at his old job in State (28 percent  thought Hillary Clinton would be best). Rasmussen says that “none of the other possible candidates comes even close,” including John McCain (17 percent), Al Gore (6 percent), and Richard Lugar (5 percent).

Obama Team Wants to Control Bill if Hillary is Sect. of State

According to sources like Political Punch, the Obama people would like tighter control of what Bill does and says in the future and the Clinton folks are not comfortable with restrictions they deem ‘severe’.

The view from Camp Clinton is that the Obama Team would too severely restrict what Bill Clinton is able to do to simply make a living. One source says the Obama Team seems to think it can demand that the former president abide by the restrictions put on a general government official, which just isn’t tenable.

There has even been talk of the Obama White House wanting to approve every speech the former President Gives gives, or any new source of income.

And while the former President’s team says he’s willing to disclose that information ahead of time, they aren’t willing to submit each speech opportunity for approval.

George H.W. Bush had no similar restrictions while his son (George W.) has been President, Clinton advocates say. Why would Bill Clinton have to stop doing what former presidents do — traveling the world, giving speeches, raising money for charitable works — when his wife is a mere Cabinet official?

This seems like a valid point. If former President Bush was not restricted from saying any darn thing he wanted while his son George W. has been President, why should Clinton have to submit every single speech and every single speaking invite for approval because his wife is a Cabinet official– not the President- just someone who works for the President?

The view is that this is the portfolio of a former President; to eliminate it — especially when Hillary Clinton still has more than $6 million in debt from her campaign — is unreasonable.

The Obama Team wants approval over how Bill Clinton earns an income if Hillary were to accept the job as Secretary of State. That does not seem reasonable at all.

If Bill were approached to speak at Harvard, he’s have to ask the Obama team if it was OK. If a publisher wanted Bill to write a book, he’d have to get the OK from the Obama White House to accept the offer. If Bill wanted to sell something on Ebay (hey with the economy the way it is, you never know) he’d have to get approval by the Obama Team. Do you see how absurd that is? You can’t reasonably ask the spouse of someone you hire to seek permission from you everytime they have a job opportunity for themselves.

In addition, the Clinton people note that Hillary’s outstanding campaign debt is still an issue. The Obama camp pledged to wipe out Hillary’s campaign debt but has not done it. To think Bill Clinton would agree to let the Obama Team determine what income opportunities he could accept in the future while that debt is still on the table is just silly.

The reports all seem to agree that while this is an issue, it’s not an insurmountable issue. It’s just a sticky point that needs to be resolved, not a deal breaker. I have faith in Hillary to consider all the facts and make the decision that feels right and will help many Americans. Go Hillary!

Will She or Won’t She?

19 Nov

hillaryclinton1Will she or won’t she? That’s the question surrounding Hillary Clinton possibly becoming the next Secretary of State. I would really love to have an answer whether it’s a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’ because I’m so tired of long drawn out dramas. The last two years leading up to the election were drama enough for me. I just want Obama’s super-team assembled and ready to go ASAP.

If Hillary is part of that team then so be it. Whatever Hillary decides will be fine. She’s a smart, tough politician capable of making a decision that is not only the right move for her, but also for the people she fights for every damn day.

Isn’t it funny how most of Obama’s team picks so far are mainly former Clinton administration people? It’s not ‘change’ to bring in the old Washington guard, but it sure is realistic. For anyone who feared the far left groups of the Dem party (like moveon.org) would takeover once Obama won, it’s very reassuring that he’s bringing in more experienced people than himself to build out the administration.

It’s as if we’re back in the 90’s with a new fresh face as the presidential front man, but the same old people working behind the scenes. Sadly it’s not Hillary, but otherwise, it is OK so far.

Well, OK for everyone but poor John Kerry. Not being the frontrunner for Sect. of State must be eating at him. Then to find out he’s not even the runner up-judas Bill Richardson is rumored to be number 2- that’s got to hurt. Like my eyes hurt when I look at this picture…
